In Memory of Sweet Nicholas

When our Samuel was born nearly four years ago, we became a part of a family we hadn’t really known existed. We were introduced slowly in the first weeks following his birth, but a few months later, we were fully immersed. Our Down syndrome family has become an incredibly important part of who I am as a mom. I rely on the support and wisdom of those who are ahead of me on this journey, and I walk through daily routines and celebrations with those who are at this same place. We really do live life together through the magic of Instagram and blogs and Facebook. Because we are walking a unique, challenging, wonderful journey together, we are very tightly knit. Many of us have never met face-to-face, but we really do feel as close as family. Because of this, when something happens to a part of our family, we are all effected in some way. Sometimes that means we celebrate and shout for joy together. And sometimes that means we cry and grieve together.

Nearly two weeks ago, our Down syndrome family received devastating news. After fighting a sudden illness, our dear Nicholas Love passed away. Four year-old Nic, with the brightest smile and the sweetest little Australian-accented voice. Through Instagram and his mum’s blog, Mumma-Love.com, I got to know Nic and Annie. Nic was only a couple months older than our Sam. When they were younger, I always thought they looked like they could be brothers. Annie was one of the very first mamas I found on Instagram. She’s a part what I consider to be my core group on this parenting journey.

I’m sad our boys didn’t get a chance to meet. And I’m absolutely heartbroken for Nic’s dear family. But I know Nic touched so many lives. And that will not be forgotten. He will not be forgotten. Darling Nicholas, you will forever be in our hearts.

Yesterday, Annie posted The Impossible Task: Writing a Eulogy for Our Four Year Old on her blog. Beautiful, beautiful words. Annie, you are so very loved.

{inspired} Women of the Word

Ladies, this one is (mostly) for you. Women of the Word by Jen Wilkin.  Since ordering the book following a short, online class I took last fall with The Influence Network, my time in Scripture has been impacted in a pretty powerful way. I would love to have read this book 15 years ago (even though it was only actually written two years ago), but I’m so very thankful to have this wisdom now!

womenoftheword

One of the main ideas in Women of the Word is clear through its tagline: How to study the Bible with both our hearts and our minds. As women it’s natural for us to focus a great deal on our emotions. That’s wonderful, since God did design us to love and feel beautifully and deeply. But he also designed us to use our minds to think critically. I have picked up scripture many, many times to simply find an answer to my issue-of-the-moment needs, merely wanting to walk away feeling better about myself. In those moments, the Bible became what I wanted and needed instead of what it truly is – the inspired Word of God. Yes, the Bible includes feel-good verses and inspiring texts, but on a much grander scale, it is telling the story of who God is. Women of the Word walks readers through how to get to that big picture view by digging into the reality of the Bible (the culture in which it was written, the audience, the author, etc) with our hearts and our minds.

Honestly, I kinda wish it wasn’t only geared toward women. There are certainly a few small moments where the writer, Jen Wilkin, speaks directly to women, but they aren’t all that numerous. Pete read it after I told him how inspiring it was for me, and he gave it a thumbs up. So read it for yourself and then pass it around!

Disclaimer: I have written this post only because I so enjoy this book and want to share it with you. I have not been compensated in any way for my thoughts or for this post.

Local Moms

If you live in the Duluth area and you’re a mama of kids in elementary school or younger, I would love for you to join us for a small group study throughout the summer every Tuesday morning 9:30-11:30. (Child care is available.) We just finished reading Women of the Word together and are getting ready to use what we learned to study the book of James beginning the first week of June. Leave a comment or send me a message for more information!

Visiting Daddy

This month and last, Pete has been working at a hospital in southern Minnesota. So much closer than New Mexico! We’ve had two opportunities already to visit him at his new location. The first was during Ella’s spring break in April and the second was last week when we surprised him in the ER waiting room! I think it’s pretty clear how excited these boys were to see each other.

Pete stays in a hotel when he’s not at the hospital, so we all had a lot of fun visiting him. Of course the favorite is the pool!

IMG_7121

Not only is there a pool, there’s also a giant water slide! Sadly, our first visit was in the middle of the week, which we soon learned is when the slide isn’t open. This guy was a little sad about not being able to play on the slide.

We played basketball instead!

We also visited the local library, which has a pretty fantastic play area. Farmer’s Market, a little puppet theatre, a picnic table and fishing boat.

Our drive back to Duluth took us through St Cloud where there happens to be a Chuck E. Cheese’s. One of Ella’s friends recently told her about the magical land of Chuck E Cheese’s, so when she saw a sign on the way to see Daddy, I took note. Three days later, we made a lunchtime stop and completely made her day. Ella isn’t overly fond of having her picture taken right now, so I don’t have many photos of her. Sam, however, doesn’t seem to mind. He first enjoyed a nice drive with Stuart Little.

And then took a spin in a cup of hot cocoa with Ella.

As well as a trip on a train.

IMG_7107

I adore this picture. Sam was a little scared of the movement of this little Noah’s Ark, so he held onto his big sister. She’s always there to protect him.

IMG_7119

Yeehaw!

IMG_7106

Our second trip, when we surprised Daddy, was just as the weather was starting to warm. Sam was thrilled to crawl through the green grass!

   IMG_7366

This girl climbs anything she can. This is also why we take her to climb at the Y a few times a week!

IMG_7386

Pumba! These little warthogs ran all over when we were on safari in Kenya a few years ago and our guide called them all Pumbas. So yes, we do have a fondness for this big guy.

IMG_7389

Pete was working nights during our visit, so we tried to go out during the day to give him a little quite time at the hotel to rest. It was nice enough for a long walk and a picnic! Sam was sharing his chocolate with Ella, which was fairly adorable to watch.

He enjoyed a bit as well.

IMG_7405

Messy face and a dirty shirt, but I just can’t resist his sweet cheeks!

IMG_7419

Does it feel like spring where you are? Or is it starting to feel like summer already? Today we soaked in the sunshine and 55 degrees! The buds are popping out on the trees and the grass is turning green. We love it!

April Photos

This month I’ve been working through all Sammy’s afternoon nap times writing emails and letters and thank yous as we continue raising support and preparing for Kenya. Because of that, the blog has been a bit quiet. Here’s a quick catch up of photos from April, though!

Daddy & Sammy love their time together.

Is it April in Duluth without a bit of snow? Sam insisted on eating scoops of it, even as I pulled pieces of grass from his lips.

Ella read 10 books and earned a free little pizza! Just like Book It when I was in elementary school. Who else remembers Book It from Pizza Hut?!

IMG_7002

So proud of our new reader!

IMG_7011

Pretty sure our Sammy baby could not possibly have any more personality. He’s hilarious!

IMG_6992

Daredevil Ella took a bold leap off the top step in front of the house and gave her knuckles a solid scrape.

IMG_7014

Ella is not only reading, she’s also writing her own stories! This was her first proper story written at home. If you know Ella, you know she adores skunks. So of course her first story was about said creature. We later corrected her spelling of skunk, not sknuk.

Her illustration.

We went in to pick up Sam’s new ankle supports but were surprised to see they were covered in daisies instead of dinosaurs! Turned into a wonderful opportunity for a possible connection with a local clinic and the special needs clinic we’ll be working with in Kenya, though. I love seeing how God works like that!

The beautiful satchel Ella made at school.

IMG_7173

Ella turned this box into a car weeks ago, and it’s been the most popular toy in our house! I caught a photo of Sam sitting in it while Ella was at school. Had she been home, she would have been seated right next to him.

We made two trips to visit Pete during a string of shifts in southwest Minnesota. One was during spring break and the other just this past weekend as a surprise for Daddy. Photos will be coming soon!

The Horns Are On Their Way!

Today is the big day for our dear friends, Eli & Krista! They’ve stored their belongings, packed their bags, and are leaving for Kenya! We could not be more excited for them. And, let’s be honest, we REALLY wish we were on the plane alongside them!

2016-03-27 11.17.03 pm

You might remember Eli, Krista, and their boys from this post I wrote a while back introducing the other half of our Kenya team. We met the Horns while Eli & Pete were in residency together about five years ago. It was then we realized both families had dreams of doing medical mission work in Africa, so we prayed about joining forces and going as a team. In the last five years, the Horns have become dear, dear friends to us. I can’t describe just how wonderful it is to be on this unique journey with another family going the same direction. We have spent lots of time dreaming together and praying together and watching our flock of children grow together from one little Ella to Ella and four little boys. (Good thing Ella is such a mother hen!) We spent hours and hours praying about the decision of which missions organization to apply to and then applying together and attending trainings together. It has been our plan for a while that they Horns would go a little while before us. It’s just hard to believe that day has come! You can follow their adventures on their blog Stories in Mission.

Last fall, Ella was thrilled to meet baby Asa. Oh, and I’ll point out that baby Asa was one week old in this photo. All three Horn boys were 10+ pounds at birth. Krista, you amaze me. Seriously.

Sam wasn’t sure what he thought about his big sister holding a baby.

Will you please join us in praying over Eli, Krista, Caleb, Kai, and Asa as they make the very long flights to Nairobi and then drive to their new home at Tenwek Hospital? They have a lot of newness coming, but we trust and believe God has already seen every step of the way and will guide them and comfort them.

We love you, Horns! Save a spot for us…We’ll be there soon!
