Our First Big Goal? Check!

You guys! We’ve hit our first financial goal in getting to Kenya and we are super, super excited to share it with you! Ready?!

We have raised enough funds to cover all of our one time costs!

This is HUGE! Obviously we could not be celebrating this milestone without all of our supporters, so we send out a ginormous THANK YOU to every single one of you who have already joined us financially. We want to give you each a giant hug! Also, Sam has a message for you…

Now, what does this mean exactly? Let me tell you. It means that all of the things we need to pay for just one time, not every month, have now been covered through financial gifts. Curious to know what some of those expenses are? Here are a few…

Plane Tickets & Moving Expenses. Getting over to Kenya and then back again after two years.

Legal Fees & Papers. So they actually let us into the country. That would be nice.

Furniture. Beds. A kitchen table. A few things that make a house a home.

Trainings. We’ve already spent one week in training at our mission’s headquarters and we’ll spend one more week there this summer. Then, right before we leave for Kenya, we’ll study as a family for four weeks at a cross-cultural training facility in Colorado Springs.

Language School. We plan to attend a 2-3 months of intense Swahili language school as soon as we arrive in Kenya. This will be vital to the long-term work we will be able to do there and the relationships we will be able to build.

So what’s next? Now we continue doing what we’ve been doing. Visiting churches, meeting with friends, speaking with small groups. We love sharing our story and our vision for what we’ll be doing in Kenya. With that, we invite people to pray about joining us financially. We won’t be paid by the hospital in Kenya, so we need to raise everything for our first two years there before we leave. That can be done two ways. The first is through one-time gifts. The second is through pledging a specific amount each month. We currently have 28% of our monthly budget pledged.

IMG_6759

Our next major goal is to reach 50% of our monthly expenses pledged. Why 50%? That is when big things happen. First, we can register for our last two trainings. Second, we will be eligible for health insurance through our mission organization. We are currently paying for insurance ourselves, as Pete is working as a freelance ER doc. Being on the mission’s health insurance will take a pretty big burden off our current budget, allowing us to pay Pete’s medical school loan faster, something we want to have finished before leaving for Kenya.

We are thrilled to share this news of having our one-time costs covered! Thank you for trusting us to be good stewards of these funds. We look forward to sharing more updates in the near future!

Let’s Celebrate! It’s World Down Syndrome Day!

Today is a day I adore being on social media. My feeds are flooded with the beautiful faces and incredible stories of those who have Down syndrome and their families. I’ll be honest – I didn’t get the Monday house cleaning finished today since I was scrolling through Facebook and Instagram every five minutes. It was so worth it! My floors can stay sticky till tomorrow. Today we’re celebrating!

Yesterday, I swung into Target with the kids to make sure we each had a fun pair of socks to wear today. We rock our socks for Down syndrome awareness for a couple reasons. One, when other people ask about our spectacular footwear, we tell them about the significance of the day. Two, wild socks are unique and awesome, just like people with Down syndrome! And three, if you put two socks back to back with the heels touching, they kind of make an X. That’s the shape of a typical chromosome. Down syndrome happens when there is an extra copy of the 21st chromosome. Fun, huh?! Sam picked checkered socks (which he keeps showing me today) and Ella picked out a very cool pair of knee-high, bright pink, sparkly socks. I’ve been saving a pair of wildly swirly socks just for this occasion, so I was already set. This morning we took quick photos before the kids were off to school. What do you think??

IMG_6684

After dinner last night, Ella helped me put together treat bags for their teachers and bus drivers, as well as a few other friends. Sam helped. Or at least ate marshmallows near us.

IMG_6696

I had a lot of time driving back from my sweet cousin’s wedding earlier in the day, so I had time to think through ideas of what I wanted to say on the treat bag topper. Once the kids were in bed, I created the topper and stuck it to the bags. The back had various facts and thoughts about Down syndrome. Tada! A perfect little way to celebrate the day.

Tonight we’ll be driving up over the hill to see the city light Enger Tower in blue and yellow for World Down Syndrome Day! Everyone will be able to see it! I’m going to be teary. I’m just putting that out there now since it’s inevitable. 🙂

Happy World Down Syndrome Day!!

Rock Your Socks!

Will you help us celebrate our amazing boy & all people with Down syndrome on Monday? It’s easy and fun to do! Wear a pair of mismatched or wild socks, and when people ask about them tell them it’s a World Down Syndrome Day!

San Diego

Last month my handsome husband was invited to teach medicine in San Diego to a group of 300 doctors from all around the world. He’s an incredible doc, but he’s also an incredible teacher. He really is! Pete has been teaching a course called CALS (Comprehensive Advance Life Support) to medical professionals all over Minnesota for a few years. Not only was he asked to teach at this conference in San Diego, but a few months before that he was also selected as the capstone speaker at the annual CALS conference. Am I proud of him? Gushingly so. Will you ever hear about any of this from him? Not a word. So, good thing I can tell you about it here, right?! He’s my favorite.

Following Pete’s week of teaching in San Diego, we took the opportunity to spend a weekend away together. At the time, he was still working long stretches at a few hospitals in New Mexico, and we weren’t getting much time together, so we jumped at the chance to hit the beach without the kids. I flew out the afternoon the conference ended and we drove up the coast to a little surfing town where I had found a small studio vacation rental away from the noise of the city. I really knew I was on vacation when I woke our first morning to the sounds of Pete making me coffee. A man who doesn’t drink coffee making an early-morning cup for the wifey? Big points in my book. (Side note: It wasn’t actually early morning. It was 10am. Vacationing without kids!)

IMG_5632

We spent a lot of time exploring local towns and checking out some very cool beaches. Of course we had to eat plenty of Mexican food being that close to the border. So, so good!

La Jolla, where we found lots of (really stinky but cute) sea lions!

All day at Pacific Beach in the glorious sunshine.

There’s just something very cool about a real surfing scene.

While at the beach, I got to start this amazing book, The Capture, written by the very talented Tom Isbell. Tom was one of my acting teachers in college. I have been inspired by his acting, directing, and playwriting for years. Now I add fiction novel writing to the list. This is the second book in his young adult series The Prey, released in January. If you like YA dystopian books like The Hunger Games or Maze Runner, this is a must read. Or listen! The audio version is very well done. I can’t wait for book three! (Disclaimer: I was not given anything at all for writing all this goodness. I just honestly really, really like the book.)

Sunset at the beach. It was a very cool, unexpected experience. Just about everyone along the beach and the boardwalk stopped for a good ten or fifteen minutes to watch the sun until it dipped beyond the horizon. A rare time when it seemed we all wanted to soak in the beauty of it. No one was too busy to sit. And as soon as the sun was gone, all movement picked up again. Just a still moment in time together.

IMG_5738

We had three glorious days together at the beach. We ate good food and read good books, stood with our toes in the chilly ocean and watched the sun set each night. It felt like we got to stop time for those three days and remember who we are, me with my Pete. Some days and weeks and, yes, the last few months, have been hard, but when we get to take just a little time to escape and reconnect, everything feels manageable again. We can pick up and head back into life. And the coolest part? It always feels like God ends up speaking big things to our hearts during those times together. So not only do we get to move back into life, but we get to move back in with new dreams and motivation. I could not be more thankful for time away together.

The Mango Gala

At long last, I am so happy to share details and photos from The Mango Gala!

mangogala-2

On Thursday, January 14, Pete and I were honored to host a gala to celebrate our upcoming journey to Kenya and share in-depth details about what we will be doing when our family moves to East Africa. My dear friend, Anna of Along an Inland Sea Photography, very graciously captured these photos of the night.

mangogala-5

About eighty friends, new and old, joined us at Greysolon Ballroom. A bit of a snowstorm the same evening prevented more from joining us, but we had a wonderful time with those who were able to make it through the drifts.

Ella was given a very special job with our dear Luke and Hannah. She welcomed guests and carefully hung their coats in the very cute little coat room. Greysolon is filled with sweet spaces and lots of character.

Following a time of hors d’oeuvres and conversation, everyone took their seat for a program.

mangogala-6

Pete began by telling stories of working in the hospital during our earlier two months in Kenya and sharing details about what he’ll be doing when we return.

mangogala-19

I was able to share what I believe I’ll be doing when we get to Kenya, including homeschooling the kids and working with a new special needs clinic.

mangogala-21

Ella also had an opportunity to share her memories of Kenya and to talk about what she’s most excited for when we return. She often tells us she wants to play with the neighbors she remembers from when she was three. Ella is so very articulate on stage. We were so proud of her!

mangogala-23

After the program, we were able to talk individually with just about every person who attended the event while Randy Lee and a few members of his band played some very excellent jazz music. A special detail? These were some of the same musicians who played at our wedding reception over eight years ago!

mangogala-24

I snapped this photo of Ella dancing with Daddy. I think she felt quite grown up at the gala.

mangogala-27

The exciting news following the gala is that we have now reached 27% of our monthly financial support! I’ll be sharing the details on that number and what it means in the next few days.

mangogala

We want to thank every person who joined us for The Mango Gala! We know many others hoped to make it, and we are so thankful to you, as well,  and ask you to continue to pray for us. If you weren’t able to join us but would still like details on how you can financially partner with what we’ll be doing in Kenya, please visit our mission page at www.wgm.org/olsen or send us a message through the contact tab at the top of this page. We are always happy to answer any question you may have. Thank you!
