Sammy and All His Superheroes

Good heavens! I got so caught up in posting all the incredible stories in September for Down Syndrome Awareness Month that I forgot to post the photos from the Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk! I will not let another moment pass without sharing these photos.

We woke in our St Paul hotel to Superman getting a very important call. It was time for the walk! Hurry, Superman! Hurry!

IMG_1096

So we headed to Como Park and joined thousands of people to celebrate those we love who have a very special extra chromosome. Our friend Kim even made cupcakes!

IMG_1360

Ella adores pony rides. We were set up pretty close to them this year, so she was able to ride over and over and over. I lost track of how many rides she took. Little superhero on a pony. Perfection.

IMG_0966

Sam made a new friend! I’ve been waiting three years for this little meet-up. Just a few weeks before Sam was born, my college theatre friend, Jen, welcomed Holden, who also happens to have Down syndrome. Two little Minnesota boys. Aren’t they just too cute together?!

IMG_0981

We dressed like superheroes again this year, which is always great fun.

IMG_0977

This year Sam matched Daddy!

IMG_0947

We had lots of friends join us, which makes the day even more special. And that quilt in the middle? It was made by Sammy’s runner! Of course we had to have it at the walk with us.

IMG_1097

Sammy had a little chat session with his fellow superheroes. (I think this group makes appearances as lots of events for kids.)

IMG_0970

After cupcakes and hotdogs and pony rides, it was time for the walk! Sam loved the live band at the start.

IMG_2830

Ella did, too, especially since they let her play their drum.

IMG_2827

By the end of the two mile walk, Sam was ready for a nap. What a day it had been!

IMG_2829

We were thrilled to be able to join everyone again this year for the Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk in St Paul. Next year, we may or may not still be in the States, so this might be our last one for a little while. But what a day it turned out to be! We really do love this big, awesome community!

Last week I said I might do it, and I did… I cut my hair! It was in great need of more than just a simple trim, which is all I’ve been doing the last few years. It was nice to grow it out, but it’s so lovely to be able to style it again after cutting off a little more than six inches. I’m getting used to the time it takes to do more than the side braid, but I’ve been playing a little worship music while curling it and trying to slow my morning a bit. There are so many things I can do to my hair again!

Pumpkins & Woodland Critters

What fun we had carving pumpkins and getting dressed up over the weekend! I absolutely considered not carving pumpkins this year. Pete was away working and I was feeling fairly awful, but when I realized it had been a few years since I had carved a pumpkin, I decided we just had to jump in. The kids’ responses made it so worth it! Sam thought the pumpkin guts were the funniest thing, though I couldn’t quite convince him to stick his hand inside to get a handful of the goo himself. He cheered me on as I carved our pumpkin. I think he was pleased with the end result.

IMG_2444

Miss Ella took control of her pumpkin with complete confidence. Well, mostly. She decided she wasn’t a big fan of the guts, either.

IMG_2173

Sam just couldn’t get over his pumpkin.

IMG_2179
Ella and I did a little team work on hers, but really, she did most of it. How cute is the owl? She did a beautiful job following the pattern! This was so much better than just painting a pumpkin, as we did last year. Honestly, that was just because I felt obligated to do something with a pumpkin. We’ll definitely be carving more in the future. Hopefully next year’s will be in Kenya!

IMG_2226

Saturday morning, I came to conclusion that my ‘cold’ wasn’t really feeling like my typical cold, so I packed up the kids and headed into Urgent Care. It only took the nurse a few minutes to tell me I had strep, so to the pharmacy we went. I felt pretty yucky during all of our Halloween festivities, but I didn’t want to miss getting the kids dressed up. We had been looking forward to their costumes for months. Well, for Ella, it had been an entire year. I was able to push through and thoroughly enjoyed taking them out. I’m so thankful to be feeling nearly 100% again, just a few days later.

IMG_2239
My theatrical side loves getting dressed up, and I adore having little ones to dress! Did you know there are very few skunk make up tutorials on Pinterest? There are countless videos for foxes, deer, owls, and rabbits, but not for skunks. Okay, no, I wasn’t surprised at all. Ella has been in love with skunks for at least the last two years. I thought it would be short-lived when she first brought it up, but it has stuck!

IMG_2245

We bought the ears and tail for her at Christmas last year. They are used multiple times a week in our house. To finish the costume, I simply bought a half yard of a strip of furry white material and pinned it to the back of her black ballet leotard. So simple!

IMG_2445

We had talked about her spraying lavender, but I vetoed that after coming to the conclusion she would likely spend the entire night spraying everyone over and over.

IMG_2266

Sam’s costume was ridiculously simple. We decided he would be a little wolf pup, a slight variation on last year’s costume as The Big Bad Wolf alongside Ella’s Little Red Riding Hood. He didn’t actually keep his ears on last year, so I didn’t have a single photo of him in the costume. This year, he did beautifully. He kept them on the entire night and even wore them while running errands on Monday morning. This was the closest I got to a picture of the two of them together. Sam loves stairs too much to simply sit on them.

IMG_2276a

After watching Ella have her entire face painted, he sat very still to have the same done on his nose. His stuffed friend is Ella’s puppet Penelope. She graciously shared her for the night.

IMG_2310

We first made our way through our building. After visiting a total of seven doors, they each had a full bucket of goodies! It’s lovely being the only kids in the building, right Ella?

IMG_2258

After driving through a few neighborhoods, we met up with friends and spent the rest of the night trick-or-treating with them. Ella was very serious about her door-to-door business. The three-year-olds in our group had no hope of keeping up.

IMG_2313

It was a perfect night! The weather wasn’t too cold, as it usually is by this time of year, and it stopped drizzling just in time for trick-or-treating. We gathered candy and spent time with friends and mama collected a nice little candy tax by the end of the evening! I’m so glad my illness didn’t keep us away. Sunday, however, really was a day of rest for the three of us. Movies and candy and naps and games. I’d say it was a pretty good weekend, all around.

Did you or your kids get dressed up this year? What did you go as? And have you already eaten all the candy? (I won’t tell if you have. I’m pretty sure the only candy we have remaining is the little bowl I tucked away in the fridge where little eyes will never find it. Chocolate is a precious commodity, after all!)

Photo Friday: A Family That Camps Together…

At the end of August, Pete was scheduled to teach an advaced life support class at a small hospital on the Iron Range, so I decided I would pack up the littles and tag along in the camper. Had I known the first two full days would be in the mid-50s and raining, I may have made a different choice. And I surely would have packed coffee. Friends, I don’t even know what possessed me to only pack tea on our four day adventure. Don’t get me wrong; I enjoy tea. But it simply cannot substitue my deep desire for a cup of coffee goodness when I am feeling stressed. As soon as there was a break in the rain during the afternoon of our second day, I plopped Sam in the stroller, told Ella to hop on her bike, and we booked it to the quaint campground shop for my small cup of heaven. I realize that my need for coffee at that time was primarily emotional, but it absolutely did the trick. I was ready to take on the world – or two kids in a little pop-up camper – after those 12 ounces. We painted glittery sticks, read Curious George, played Hello Kitty Uno, and had a bit of a dance party, all before Daddy returned from the hospital for dinner. Thankfully, the next two days were sunny. We spent the entire time outside! It was absolutely lovely.

Sadly, this was the only camping trip we were able to take this summer. I’m so glad we managed to get this in before school started. Next summer we will do our best to squeeze in as many camping adventures as possible before we head off to Kenya. Because boy oh boy, do we adore camping!

My Little Boy on the Bus

We have a preschooler! I still have very mixed feelings about this whole deal, but Sam’s excitement when we stepped on the bus for the first time last Friday was so very good for my mama heart.

IMG_0526

Ella was incredibly excited for Little Brother to experience his own first day of school. Weeks before, I let her pick which backpack she thought Sam would like best. Then we had his name embroidered on it, just as we did for her first day of preschool three years ago. We tried to capture a few photos of the two of them together, but this was the best I could get. Cute kids, awful lighting. I didn’t allow enough time for us to take them outside before she jumped on her bus. Good heavens, I adore these two together!

IMG_0524

After Big Sister was off to school, I tried taking a few photos of Sammy man out on the deck, but he clearly just wouldn’t have it. In fact, he was so fussy I was worried he wasn’t going to want to go to school! That turned out to be far from what actually happened, though.

IMG_0523

Honestly, when we stepped out to the street and saw an enormous yellow school bus, I had to take a moment. I had mentally prepared myself to put him into a van, as I had been told would be the case. Getting him on a full-size bus seemed a far bigger deal. I was incredibly thankful to have Pete with me for the morning, as my emotions would have been a little shaky otherwise.

IMG_0525

We took our buddy onto the bus, met his driver and his bus aid, and got him strapped in.

I could not have asked for more lovely people to accompany him to and from school. We signed our I love yous, blew kisses, and watched him head off on his first big day! So many emotions, but mostly I was bursting with pride. My boy was doing it!

IMG_0528

The bus was met at his school by Ms Brenda, the teacher Sam has been working with through the school district since the same month he first arrived home from the hospital. I was so happy to have her texts throughout the morning, including this sweet photo of Sam sitting up at the table working with clay.

IMG_0529

We’re so very thankful for our school district and all the services they offer. They helped us arrange for Sam to a typical preschool just up the hill from us two days a week. Because of his diagnosis, they also provide bus pick-up and drop-off and they have one of his therapists (PT, OT, speech) at the school with him each day. They work with Sam in his learning environment and help his teachers with any necessary modifications. What a privilege it is for Sam to have this opportunity before we leave next summer! He’ll be soaking in social experiences that he wouldn’t have staying home with me. I certainly look forward to molding is education at home in Kenya in the future, but this is a beautiful fit for us at this time. Just imagine everything our sweet Samuel will learn this school year!

First Grade & Mama Fears

Last night, I wasn’t quite sure we would be getting any sleep at all. Ella was far too excited for her first day of first grade. She laid out her clothes for the morning, set out her new pink pony lunch bag, was tucked in by 8pm. Sleep, however, didn’t come for another two hours. Eventually, I cuddled in next to her to rub her back and sing in the hopes she would drift to sleep. At last, she did. And so did I.

Ella First Grade

This morning we were up bright and early, long before we needed to be. The two of us made breakfast together while Sam played at the table. I would like to say we had something lovely and maybe a bit fancy. Whole wheat pancakes with fresh blueberries perhaps, or fluffy Belgian waffles drowned in maple syrup. But no, we reheated a cinnamon roll from yesterday’s batch. Not homemade, mind you. They came from a can. But hey, we completely enjoyed that cinnamon roll together. I packed her lunch, put Sam in the stroller, and walked to the end of the street to wait for the bus. As we waited, she proudly posed for the first-day-of-school photos and then she was off! Her first day of first grade.

I do find it a bit hard to believe I have a first grader. Part of it is that I have very clear memories of first grade. My teacher Mrs Anderson, my first crush who definitely didn’t share my sentiments, playing for hours on end with my best friend Chanda. The fact that I can still remember such vivid details of the year I was six makes me realize that my girl is old enough to store away her own, as well. Memories that will last her entire life. She’ll remember how it feels to be invited to a friend’s birthday party, learn fascinating new things in school, and, heaven forbid, have her first crush. Sweet memories. But along with the sweet memories, she will inevitably have the not-so-sweet memories. Like being embarrassed by someone in her class or making a choice she wishes she hadn’t. My mama heart so dearly wants to protect her from those hard memories. I want to be shield her from the twinge of hurt that accompanies them for years after they initially took place. But that wouldn’t be fair, would it. Not when I consider how much I grew from those moments. How I learned who I was and who I didn’t want to be. And how I became stronger and smarter and kinder. Those are the qualities I want for my Ella. So I will let her grow and I will let her make her memories. Because mixed in with all those harder memories are really, really good ones. And those are the beautiful pieces she will place together when she remembers what it was like to be my little girl.

For those hard moments when I feel my mama heart truly worrying, I remember this verse from Isaiah. There is no reason to fear. He is with me and He is with my darling girl.

What are some of your favorite memories from your first years of school?

Sara Montour Photography

My sweet friend Sara is a pretty spectacular photographer. We go all the way back to high school together. She graduated a year after me. Sara has since traveled near and far taking photos of beautiful kids and a whole lot of cool musicians. Just a few months ago, she moved into a bright, new studio space in Minneapolis. Every so often, Sara offers a 10 in 10 session for kids. They are quick, fun sessions that occasionally have a theme. When I got an email back in May announcing the next 10 in 10 session, I booked two slots for our Ella & Sam. What a fun time we had when our June date came around!

Sammy was all about the love that morning.

Miss Ella, who loves to perform, wasn’t quite up for photos until Sara pulled out a big, beautiful blanket. First she was a lovely princess.

And then she turned into a bride. I melted when I saw this photo. Someday we’ll pull it out for her wedding day.

And this. Their sweet sibling love. The best of friends.

This wasn’t the first time Sara took photos of Ella. Way back when Ella was about to celebrate her first birthday, we caught Sara near the Rose Gardens and she captured these. Such a little girl! And, again, polka dots. What can I say? I just love them.
