Last Week of Summer

We looove to travel in our family, and that’s what we had planned to do the last week of summer before jumping back into the swing of school. The thought was to rent an RV and drive around our favorite enormous body of water, Lake Superior. Doesn’t that sound great?! But as the time approached, we felt like we had been traveling and camping enough through the summer, and a week at home doing fun things in our own city would fill our need for adventure. Because, for real, this is where we live. Gorgeous. And plenty to do in the warm weather months. (I may not say the same during the frigid winter months.)

img_1295

We’ve got a pretty great water park near the lake that Ella asks to visit nearly every time we drive by. When we decided to stick around town, I packed a bag, grabbed the swimming suits, and we “went to get gas” at a station near the water park/hotel. While Pete was “paying for gas inside” he was actually running across the parking lot to check us in at the hotel. When he came back, we moved the car to the hotel parking lot and asked the kids if they’d like to stay for a night. Their response?

img_1332

Yup, that about sums it up! We spent every hour possible in the water.

img_1311

And then we spent lots of tokens in the arcade. Obviously, Pete is working on passing off his riding skills to Ella.

img_1316

We also played mini golf outside after dark with two lovely friends who were in town and also staying at the hotel. Sam crawled from hole to hole, picking up our balls and dropping them in each hole. I think he wanted to make sure we scored well. I needed all the help I could get. No joke!

At some point during the week, I took the kids to Target just to spend time in the toy department. We must have walked up and down every aisle looking at all the toys and games and play sets for at least an hour.

img_1287

This guy thought it was pretty great. I so wanted to buy that snail for him. But I didn’t. Good job, mama.

img_1298

One gorgeously sunny morning, we hopped on the train and rode it up the shore.

img_1365

No matter how many times we take the scenic train, we just love it.

img_1350

Ella found a stash of books on board all about trains.

img_1357

And the boys took a nap. Well, Pete did anyway. Sam munched on crackers. Nom nom nom.

img_1362

After our train ride, I suggested we get ice cream. In Silver Bay. It was an hour drive up the shore, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We talked about what we had done through the summer and what the new school year in a new school might look like. And then the kids ate Superman ice cream on a porch in the sun. (Do you spy their blue lips?)

img_1374

At the end of the week, we spent an entire morning having brunch at a park with friends and the afternoon at another park with friends. Pretty much a kid’s dream, but it was so great for the adults to spend time catching up while all the kids played. Whenever we get together with friends like that, I feel that’s how life is supposed to be. I so easily get caught up in the need to check everything off my to-do list and forget to make time to spend with the people around me. I never regret a moment of the time I spend with them and, seriously, I could care less about my lists when I get to sit and really connect with other people. I have to remind myself of that sometimes. That day at the park was so very good, investing in friends and letting the lists wait. That’s something I’m really trying to focus on this fall, especially before we take off for Africa. Spending time with other people is really like nothing else.

This is Summer!

We love us some summa’ time!

At the very end of Ella’s school year, she went on the annual Park Point hike with her school. My friend was along on the hike and sent me this photo. I just love it.

 IMG_8355

This girl and her style.

IMG_8271

Since he now knows how to blow, he’s been loving the dandelions.

IMG_8394

A visit to Grandma & Grandpa’s to play with cousins!

IMG_8424

Ah, my hometown water tower. The bobber.

IMG_8431

My sister and I took our girls to Dru’s Park in the middle of town. Dru was a beautiful young woman I sat beside in choir and was on student council with in high school. Her life ended tragically when we were in college, but we remember her here. IMG_8441

S’mores with Grandma and Grandpa. A favorite, or course!

IMG_8472

And hugs with the cousins.

IMG_8494

Luke & Hannah got a puppy! Ella and Sam are completely in love with little Bailey. Though she won’t be little much longer!

IMG_8530

Sure do love our Hannah!

IMG_8555

This is the first summer in our current house, and we were wonderfully surprised to find lots of lilac bushes next to us. Ella took it upon herself to gather jars of them for our table and to deliver to the neighbors.

IMG_8594

Summer simply cannot exist without ice cream. It’s a fact.

IMG_8670

I’ve taken the kids up to Gooseberry State Park multiple times in the last two months. It’s a quiet hour or so up the shore from us, so the kids watch a movie while I listen to an audio book. Then we have a picnic and hike to the falls. God’s creation is absolutely breathtaking.

IMG_8690

Sam is always enthralled by the water.

IMG_8795

One of the things we’ve most been looking forward to this summer has been Ella’s lemonade stand. She worked on various jobs throughout the winter so she could have enough money to buy supplies to start her little business. We live on a great road for a stand this summer. We hope to be out many more days as the summer progresses.

IMG_9100

It was pretty exciting to have a sweet friend stop by for a cold cup of lemonade!

IMG_9106

And Ella voted Pastor Michael as the coolest customer of her first day. A clear winner, indeed!

IMG_9110

We’ve really just begun summer here in Duluth, so we’re looking forward to many more adventures! What are you most looking forward to this summer?

Miss Lilah & Dwarfism Awareness Month

Spencer Family-17

We’ve spent this month on The Mango Memoirs celebrating Down Syndrome Awareness Month. However, I don’t want to miss the opportunity to recognize Dwarfism Awareness Month, also in October, by introducing you to Lilah. I met this beautiful girl and her mama, Leslie, a couple years ago over Instagram, but met them in real life for the first time last winter. Honestly, before meeting Lilah, I knew very little about dwarfism. Leslie shares openly about their journey as a way to educate and bring joy to so many about what life is like for a young person born with dwarfism. I highly recommend following her gorgeous Instagram feed at @DreamBigLittleOnes. Leslie also writes at DreamBigLittleOne.com and is on Facebook and Twitter.

When did you learn about Lilah’s diagnosis?
We found out about Lilah’s diagnosis when I was 33 weeks pregnant at an ultrasound. The doctor said at the time he was 99% sure.

What were some of the emotions you had when you got the diagnosis?
I was caught completely off-guard and I felt crushed. I had to call my husband on the phone and relay the news that Lilah would be born with dwarfism— it was the hardest sentence I have ever had to say. We had some dark moments in the first few days and then we began putting things into perspective and coming to terms with her diagnosis. By the time she was born, we didn’t have any misgivings about her dwarfism and we were just thrilled that she was our daughter— exactly they way God made her.

What are some of Lilah’s favorite things?
Lilah is a firecracker – so much fun and such a big personality. She’s full of life and brightens everyone’s day who comes into contact with her. She’s very girly and loves princesses, dancing and animals.

What is something you want everyone to know about Lilah?
I want people to know that she’s more alike than different. I don’t want peoples’ reactions to her to be hurtful (even though I know this will happen). I want people to try her fairly and with kindness.

SpencerFam0027

What have been good resources for you to learn more about dwarfism?
We really like the website Understanding Dwarfism.

What is something you don’t think many people know about dwarfism?
I think people would be surprised to know that 80% of individuals born with dwarfism are born to average-height parents.

What are some of the appropriate terms related to dwarfism? What are terms that are outdated or should not be used?
I prefer “born with dwarfism” — that’s just my personal preference. It is PC to also say little person, person of short stature and dwarf although I do not like these terms. It is offensive to use the word “midget.”

What is one thing you feel people need to know about dwarfism?
I feel like the history of dwarfism (and treatment of those born with dwarfism) really creates this long road we have to go down to be able to expect equal treatment for these individuals born with dwarfism. Hollywood, Disney, circuses and many other outlets have treated created this fantasy-world around dwarfism that is absolutely not true and makes it challenging for those born with dwarfism to live life without these stereotypes following them around. It creates such a need for awareness.

If someone you knew was told their baby would be born with dwarfism, what would you tell them?
This is the letter I wrote to new parents… click here

If you could go back to the days and weeks after first hearing the diagnosis, what would you tell yourself?
Everything was going to be ok… better than ok.

What is the most wonderful thing about being Lilah’s mama?
That God trusted me to be her mama— very honored.

For a beautiful post Leslie published on her blog about her stance on awareness, click here. And while you’re there, read a whole lot of other posts. They will touch your heart and impact your perspective, just as they have done for me.

Last month, I traveled with my dear friend, Anna, and her little boy to spend a weekend at The Influence Conference. We stayed with Leslie’s family through those days, and let me tell you, Leslie is absolutely right when she says Lilah is a little firecracker! She loved on little Raleigh, showed us how to make the best silly faces, and asked to show us her pink bedroom over and over. I’m so looking forward to watching Lilah grow up. She is going to do incredible things!

Must Be Summer!

IMG_7062

running errands in mama’s heels

Summer! We’re loving it! Ella has been out of school for three weeks and we are on full summer mode. The only thing missing is summer heat, though I’m okay taking that part in moderation. It usually takes a while for Duluth to warm up, so in the next couple weeks we’ll probably start seeing it climb to the 80s. I know, I know. All of you anywhere south of us are probably thinking 80 sounds cool. But that’s life on Lake Superior! We usually get two hot weeks, but those don’t come around until August. Until then, we shall soak in our ‘pseudo-summer.’

IMG_7199

The biggest adjustment since Ella graduated from kindergarten has been getting used to the schedule. She does best when she has something structured outside the house each day, so I registered her for something each week in the mornings. Last week was theatre camp and this week is nature camp. I had this grand idea that I would drop her off each morning at nine, run errands with Sam, he would nap a bit while I wrote or cleaned up the house, and then we would eat and leave to get Ella. Lovely, right? Well, somehow in my planning I forgot that Sam has therapies three mornings a week and I lead a moms’ Bible study on Tuesday mornings. That leaves one morning a week when we aren’t going from drop off to therapy to errands to pick up. Four weeks following nature camp will be tennis, which is only 45 minutes in the morning, so we might have a little more down time, but then we still have therapies and, still, we have just one car. I tried to plan well but clearly left a few details out of the calculations. Oops! At least we’re having fun!

IMG_7200

With all the running in the mornings, my afternoons have been filled with errands and Kenya prep and meetings while the kids are at home with our dear Ms Donna. I would be struggling with this schedule if we didn’t have her with the kids four afternoons a week. I really need the time to get the big tasks done. Unfortunately, that leaves me with very little, if any, time to write. I’m so relieved to have a quick hour today to squeeze in some writing time. I’ve realized that my writing is how I focus my thoughts and my heart, whether it’s blogging here or journaling or writing long, hand-written notes to friends. When I don’t get any alone time to write, I start to feel jumbled and anxious. I’m taking a deep breath right now, sipping an iced chai, and getting my thoughts in order. I have really, really needed this.

Next week is Ella and Sam’s birthday party! I wrote not too long ago about their upcoming pirate and mermaid party. I’ve been working on projects here and there to have it put together in time. It turned out that we have to have it on a Tuesday afternoon. I was a little worried about scheduling it for that time, but parents seem to be happy to have something to do with the kids on a summer afternoon. The grandparents even get to join us! And we did make that pinata I mentioned. Ella was interested at first, but once she realized that paper mache is pretty messy, she no longer wanted to participate. Not at all what I was expecting. So I did a good part of it. We have to put on the finishing touches, and then I’ll post a photo. As for the rest of the party, I’m working to primarily use materials I already have, but there were a few little things I decided to purchase. I know we’re not buying extra stuff right now, but they are having a combined party, which saves a lot of money, and sweet Sam hardly had a party last year. We just met a few friends at a playground and had cookies and juice boxes. Am I making excuses for spending? Yes. Yes, I am. I love hosting parties! I spent some money, and that’s just the way of it. The party is going to be adorable!

IMG_6874

My hour at the coffee shop is nearly over, so I must wrap up. Pete needs the car in 15 minutes. I hope you are all enjoying your summer! I’d love to hear what your favorite part has been so far or what the weather is like where you are. It must be warmer than Duluth, right? 😉

Here We Are!

Our computer is on the mend! Can I tell you how happy this makes me? I was praying her issues could be fixed instead of requiring us to purchase something new right now. We’re trying to avoid extra purchases, of course, but a computer is hard to be without. We managed for about a month on the iPad, but it is far more time consuming for me to do anything with photos in a blog post on it. We were finally able to get the laptop to the Apple Store on Sunday and this morning it was back at my door. And we weren’t charged a thing. Talk about service! So now I kinda want to stay up all night catching up on photos and all things computer. I probably won’t, since I’m trying to get better about my sleep schedule, but maybe. Hmmm.

IMG_6298

he loves scooting around on the zebra

I feel like we’re in need of an update! Biggest news? Sam is going to be THREE on Sunday! I’m working on wrapping my head around this before the day actually arrives. I’m hoping to maybe do a little photo shoot with him in the next couple days and to spend some time dreaming through the last few years. I love celebrating birthdays with the littles. It’s such a magical time for them. I don’t want to dread each time they roll around, getting sad over the fact they are growing older. God is doing beautiful things through them and that needs to be celebrated!

IMG_6210

this kid is obsessed with popsicles!

Ella has just a few more weeks of kindergarten. The year has flown! We’ve all been learning how to work through the ins and outs of independence. She has made some very sweet friendships this year. We’ve been thankful for her opportunity to be at the Montessori school, where she’s had the same teachers the last three years. They know her very well and have guided her through some wonderful educational and social lessons. Next year, she’ll be at the same school where there will be about 15 kids total in first through sixth grade. I still think this has been the very best way to prepare her to be homeschooled with we get to Kenya.

IMG_6264

Miss Ella’s before & after – a little pixie cut for summer

As for the summer, Ella will be having all kinds of adventures! I’ve registered her for morning activities through June and July and a little bit of August. She’ll be doing theatre camp, tennis lessons, VBS, and day camp at a nearby nature center. She’ll be busy, but not overwhelmed, since I only signed her up for one activity at a time. It might get a little tricky with just the one car, but we’ll make it work!

Pete will continue working hard this summer. He is doing an incredible job of paying off his medical school loan! This was one big hope we had with limiting our spending for these six months. We should be finished paying the loan off sometime this winter. Though he is working a lot, he is very intentional about spending good time with us each week. We are devoted to our weekly date night. He takes Ella out each week, too. When he’s home in the evenings, wrestling with the kids is inevitable, and he often naps with Sam in the afternoons. We love him and everything he is doing to get us to Kenya!

IMG_5725

date night

Speaking of Kenya, how about an update? We recently sent out our first mailing to kick off our fundraising. Next, we’ll be meeting in person with people who have expressed interested in partnering with us in East Africa. We are also dreaming of a few event possibilities to share our hearts in the fall. As for training, this fall we will be taking an online course focusing on missions in the Bible and then a week of sessions at the mission headquarters in Indiana. Sometime next summer we will attend a month of intercultural training in Colorado Springs, and then we hope to be off for Kenya at the end of the summer of 2016. Lots of work before then! We love it, though. We’ve been dreaming of this for years and years, so there is so much joy in all the preparation. Will you please be praying for us as we continue to move forward with everything? And if you would like to receive one of our letters, please click here to send us an email with your mailing address and we’ll get it right to you. We would love for you to be a part of our team! Real lives are going to be touched through the medical training Pete will be guiding and through the education I hope to provide once we get there. I get so excited talking about it!

IMG_5143

small group mamas helping with our first mailing

Oh! And me! I am working on gearing up for summer and all the fun stuff Sam, Ella, and I will get to do together. I’m getting ideas from Pinterest and talking to friends about play dates. I want to be outside as much as possible. I’m even painting a little table I found a while ago at Saver’s so we can take it out in the grass with us. It will be perfect for sketching in our journals, having tea parties, and eating lunch by the water. I’m also getting ready to start a new book with the moms’ small group I lead at our place on Tuesday mornings. We just finished The Best Yes (so highly recommend it!) and will be starting The Fringe Hours on June 2 (also so, so good). If you’re a mama in the Duluth area, you are more than welcome to join us. Send me an email for more information. The group does have child care! I also started P90X3 last week and am working hard at sticking with it this time. I haven’t had a good track record with that since Sam was born. I love the workouts, I love eating well, it’s just putting it all together every day and making it a part of my regular life again. I will do this! (And yes, I will take any prayers for perseverance you want to send my way.)

And that’s that! All updated! Be sure to check in on Sunday for sweet Samuel’s third birthday!

A Few New Features

If you swing by often, you may notice that we’ve got a few new things hanging out in the sidebar. And if you’re not a regular visitor, WELCOME! I want to take just a moment to point out the new features.

But first, a photo of Sam. Just because it feels right.

IMG_3146

Ok, new features:

  1. We have a new photo! This was taken last summer at my sister’s wedding by the incredibly talented Anna Genevieve. (Click here for photos of my sister’s beautiful day.) I asked her if we could get a family photo, we paused, she snapped, and that was it! Honestly, I was a little worried it wouldn’t turn out since she took one single photo, but it absolutely did! We’re all smiling and looking at the camera, and I love how she completely captured Ella and Sam’s personalities. This is the same photo we’re using on our prayer cards as we prepare for Kenya.
  2. We’ve added a link to our page with World Gospel Mission (WGM). This is the organization we’ll be working with in Kenya. The page includes our biography as well as a form to make a donation to our ministry fund, the fund that will help our family get to Kenya and then do all the incredible things God has laid on our hearts for our life there. More on that later…
  3. You can now follow our blog by email! Instead of checking in for an update at random times, you can sign up to receive an email when we do post something new. We encourage you to sign up in the sidebar!
  4. There are a few new categories, and I’m now working on going through old posts to categorize them, which make it much easier to follow a particular theme here on the blog. All you have to do is click on one and a whole list of posts will pop up in that category. Like I said, though, I’m working on getting those updated.
  5. I’ve added a link to The Influence Network, an incredible community of women I’ve joined for encouragement and inspiration. They offer lots of resources through online publications, live online classes, conferences, podcasts, and discussion forums. Click the link if you’re interested in finding out more!
  6. Finally, we’ve launched a new Facebook page and have added the link to that new page. This was the easiest way to make our Facebook presence more user-friendly as we begin to share our heart for Kenya with lots of new people. If you’re not following our new page yet, simply click the like button in the sidebar.

new features

One other change you won’t see in the sidebar is actually on our CONTACT page in the top menu. We now have a PO Box as we prepare for Kenya. It’s a permanent address for us through our upcoming moves. If you ever want to contact us through snail mail (which we love!), you can use that address. If you already have our regular address, though, you can continue to use that one until our move.

Wow! Look at me! I’ve posted three times this week! I used to have grand dreams of posting 4 or 5 times a week and covering all these cool topics, but then I got real and recognized the fact that this blog is not my job. As cool as I think it would be to be able to blog for a living, I just don’t feel God leading me that way. It is always my goal to get in one solid post each week, something a little more than simply posting a few photos or a link to something I like. It a good way for me to continue to write. Besides that, I really, really love connecting with each of you. I do. It means the world to me that I can write from my heart and there are real people who take the time to read it. And then you respond! Some of you comment here on the blog and a lot more of you comment on Facebook or Instagram. I’ve also been getting some very encouraging emails and Facebook messages from others who are either going down similar paths as our family or who are inspired to do so. It is because of all of you that I continue to return to this space with excitement to share our days through words and photos. Please don’t stop commenting. I can’t tell you the encouragement it brings!
