Celebrating the 4th

Just a couple days after getting to Aitkin, we celebrated the 4th of July. I’ve always enjoyed celebrating the 4th in small town style. We spent the morning driving to Pequot Lakes to watch the parade, which felt odd since my parents wouldn’t be there to watch it with us. They were in Park Rapids celebrating with my aunt and her family.

Miss Ella was ready and waiting for the parade.

Ella had a great view from Daddy’s shoulders.

My last year or two of high school in Pequot, I played the tuba. It was basically because I had gotten tired of all the flutes in the band and wanted something completely different. I’m guessing one of those big white tubas was one of the same that I played 10 years ago!

Riding in style.

Remember these? I used to love Pop Rocks! After the parade, as we headed back to Aitkin for the fireworks, Pete picked these up for us. It was like being back in elementary school! Ella loved them too, but it’s hard to snap a pic of them popping in action. You’ll just have to take my word for it. She thought they were great!

Before heading to the ball fields for the fireworks, we stopped at one of the only places still open at 6:15 on the 4th of July. I’m sure this place has a name, but I only remember a big RESTAURANT sign outside. It’s one of those places that basically consists of all comfort foods – hamburgers, fried chicken, mac & cheese, corn dogs, and big plates of fries. Yum yum yum.

Miss Ella enjoyed her corn dog. Seemed appropriate for the 4th.

We eventually made it to the ball fields where kids were playing pick-up games while their parents sat on big blankets talking to other parents. Ella could have watched the games all night.

I was eventually able to lure her away from the fields with the promise of pie. She helped me choose a big piece of strawberry rhubarb with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Once the mosquitoes came out, I settled Ella in the Burley. It has a nice screen over the top. Wish I could have crawled in there with her.

We parted ways with Pete once we got to the fields to watch the fireworks. He had been recruited for some very important work. What could it have been? I’ll only say that it had nothing to do with medicine. Watch for a follow-up post to find out what he was up to. It still makes me laugh.

We've Moved!

It’s true that we’ve moved, but this time it’s quite temporary. We are spending the month of July in the small Minnesota town of Aitkin. Pete has been placed here for his month-long rotation in rural medicine. It’s the perfect time of year to be near the lakes since the weather has finally turned hot and humid. And we’re only 45 minutes away from my parents! We hope to spend lots of time with them over the next few weeks.

While in Aitkin, we’re staying an a beautiful English-inspired home with a dear couple, Frank & Sally. Ella has started calling them Nana & Papa, just like her own grandparents. The couple moved here from England six years ago and brought everything in the house from the other side of the pond. The home is about six miles outside of town right on a bend of the Mississippi River. Ella is in love with the sprawling back yard, pint-size pram for her baby, and kiddie pool out back. This mama is enjoying the character of the house, sharing stories with Sally, and swinging on the back porch. This will be a lovely vacation!

I’m happy to share that I finished summer classes the day before coming to Aitkin. It was a month of reading reading reading, so I’m glad to slow things down again. I do have one research paper to complete this month, which I’m hoping to get out of the way in the next few days. I want to enjoy the rest of the summer without classwork hanging over my head.

Now that I have more time, I hope to post more often. I have so much catching up to do! First, I need to share pictures of Miss Ella’s 2nd birthday party. We had such a great time making cupcakes and playing outside. We spent the 4th of July in Pequot watching the parade and then in Aitkin for mini donuts and fireworks. So many pictures! I’ll try to get on those.

This weekend is going to be another busy one! We’ll be traveling Thursday and Friday to Milwaukee for Pete’s cousin’s wedding. We’re looking forward to celebrating such a lovely couple and spending time with Auntie Kristin and Nana & Papa Olsen.

My Ella has awoken! We’re off for our first official walking exploration of Aitkin. I already discovered that there are two fabric stores, a second-hand shop, and something else that I got excited about…I just can’t remember what it was. I’ll let you know soon! Off we go!

Remembering Great-Grandpa Scott

Yesterday we said goodbye to my Grandpa Scott (Ella’s great-grandpa) during a beautiful, small ceremony near Sturgeon Lake. Grandpa was a great man who experienced a lot in his life. We’ll surely miss him, but we’ll always have amazing memories of our time together.

This picture was taken at a park in St Cloud nearly four years ago. These are most of my siblings and cousins on the Scott side. Aren’t my grandparents adorable? I love them so much.

A few of my favorite memories of Grandpa Scott:

  • playing in the yard at the house where my dad grew up in Richfield
  • going to Twins games
  • his wave in the driveway every time we left his house
  • the doll house he made for Becky & I when we were little
  • riding in his big car on city streets
  • the penny m&m machine that was also a lamp
  • his pretend British accent before he’d kiss the back of my hand
  • his drawings
  • the Snow White & Nutcracker collections
  • fishing on the pontoon while eating Sun Chips & drinking root beer
  • Pass the Pigs
  • Thanksgiving dinner with the football game on

I’m going to keep adding to this list. It makes me happy to think of all the things we did together.

We’ll miss you, Grandpa, but we’ll see you again.
