The Fine Arts Festival

We’ve nearly made it through the school year! At the end of each academic year, all the missionary kids at Tenwek collect pieces of writing, art, and other projects to put on display for our entire missionary community to see. Ella loved being a part of it this year. Sam had a few pieces from our preschool sessions, but he’s not big into art projects at the moment, so our family display was mostly from Ella.

This was the aqueduct Ella made recently in class while studying Ancient Rome.

This ocean box was a product of Ella’s grade 3 & 4 science class. Each week they learned about a particular type of sea creature and would then create them out of modeling clay.

The tiny details were amazing!

The Fine Arts Festival also includes performances where classes sing or recite poems. A couple of the kids played piano and one family recited Bible verses from A to Z. I helped direct a play about Odysseus, one of the stories Ella’s class studied last winter. Rees, a 7th grader, wrote a pretty amazing script based on the story and the kids 3rd grade and older performed it at the end of the festival. Here, the Cyclops is putting his sheep into his cave while Odysseus and his sailors hide.

At one point, Ella’s character was turned into a pig! I love seeing this girl on stage.

We didn’t have a whole lot of time to rehearse this 20-minute play, but the kids did beautifully! It was such fun for me to be doing theatre again.

Afterward, we caught photos of all the school-aged kids with Miss Grace. Leave it to my kids to be overly animated!

And then we took this photo of all the kids and all the teachers. There weren’t many people in the room who weren’t in the photo!

We have been so very blessed by Miss Grace this year. She has taught Ella in the co-op class Monday through Thursday, and Ella has grown tremendously from it. We’re so thankful to have someone here who has been dedicated primarily to teaching the 3rd/4th grade class. This year would have been quite different without it!

We’re now pushing through the last couple weeks of the regular school year before we wrap up. I’ll continue to do a couple things with Ella through the summer, mostly because we didn’t get through it all while Pete & I were doing language classes every morning. Otherwise, we’re looking forward to lots of outside play time when 3rd grade is finished!
